Athony Dabe added some colour to his birthday by winning his first classic: Zyte GP. Our reporter (R) asked Dabe some questions:
(R): 'This must be one of your more spectacular birthday gifts?'
(D): 'Well, obviously it's a great feeling to win my first classic on my birthday, but a gift? It's not like the other riders stood aside to let me win, you know? For a moment I thought Declan Doherty was going to win, but Øivind Høyland and I managed to get back just in time and it turned out that I was the strongest.'
(R): 'I see, so your birthday was just another day in the office?'
(D): 'I don't win a trophy every day.' Dabe smiled. 'But yeah, beside a few congratulations from teammates and other friends. It's not like you can serve cake during the race. There's time enough for that later today though.'
(R): 'I can imagine that the trophy will have a prominent place at that time?'
(D): 'I guess...' Dabe hesitated and looked at the trophy for a while. 'After that, I think it will go to the same room where I keep my Bermuda jerseys.'
(R): 'Some kind of small museum?'
(D): 'Yes... yes, let's call it a museum.'
(R): 'On that note, did you know that with today’s win you reached the top 5 of all-time Bermudian riders?'
(D): 'No... Who did I pass? Defore? Nice. As a kid I was more interested in Bermuda's climbing heroes Jaudon and Lefevre, but Defore and other sprinters like Coy were also very important in our cycling history. It's an honour to stand among those men.'
